Russian icon of the Apostle Saint Paul, XIX century, height – 53 cm.

Prior to his apostolic mission, the Lord Himself gave a new name to the fisherman Simon, calling him Peter (meaning “rock” in Greek). The Lord promised to create His Church on this rock of Peter’s faith, which the gates of hell shall not prevail. The apostle Peter saw the greatest miracles of the Savior, he attended His Transfiguration on Mount Tabor and was present at the prayer in Gethsemane prior to the Lords crucifixion. Peter disowned the Lord three times, but he redeemed his sin through repentance and prayer.
