Russian icon of the Apostle Saint Mark, XIX century, height – 53 cm.

Saint Mark was an apostle from 70, that is, one of the 70 disciples of Christ, whom the Lord Himself chose in the last year of His earthly life and gave them similar instructions as the 12 apostles. The apostle Mark is the author of one of the canonical Gospels, therefore he is revered by the Church as an Evangelist. The apostle Mark founded the Church in Egypt, was the first bishop of Alexandria, preached in Libya, Necropolis, and Central Africa. In Rome, he visited the arrested apostle Paul and wrote the Gospel for the faithful Gentiles.
