Russian icon of the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary, XIX century
Dimensions: 31 x 26.5 cm
“Annunciation” is a good, wonderful message, which the archangel Gabriel announced to the Virgin Mary that She was chosen to become the Mother of the Savior of the World. Establishment of this holiday was facilitated by St. Elena in the beginning of the IV century, who identified the holy places of the Savior’s earthly life and the construction of temples in these places, including the basilica in Nazareth, on the site of the appearance of the Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary. In this masterfully painted icon, the scene of the Annunciation is depicted against the backdrop of the Temple of Jerusalem, which has a symbolic meaning, as Mary, by giving her consent, herself became a living temple. The ray of light directly points to the future birth of the Divine Infant. The dove is a symbol of the holy spirit as well as purity, innocence and heavenly love. The red color of the seat and the footrest emphasize the royal origin of the Virgin Mary. The golden background of the icon creates a mood of significance of the special event of the Annunciation.
